The RUMEN Gateway Project is an international research initiative funded by the Global Methane Hub, bringing together partners from countries across the Global North and South. 

The project aims to expand the rumen microbial biobank and advance understanding of rumen microbiology to support the development of microbiome-based strategies for methane mitigation and more sustainable livestock systems. 

Unlocking the rumen microbiome to drive the next generation of methane mitigation strategies

Enteric methane from ruminant livestock is a major contributor to agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The RUMEN Gateway Project addresses this by advancing understanding of the rumen microbiome and expanding a global biobank of rumen microbes. By integrating culturing, genomics, and bioinformatics, the project enables identification of microbial pathways linked to methane production. 

This knowledge supports the development of targeted mitigation strategies—such as vaccines, inhibitors, and microbiome interventions—while ensuring solutions are globally relevant through diverse, international collaboration.

From microbes to impact: delivering the infrastructure for a low-emission livestock future.

RUMEN Gateway will deliver a globally accessible biobank of rumen microbes, supported by standardised protocols and harmonised data. This resource will accelerate research, improve reproducibility, and strengthen international collaboration. By identifying and prioritising key microbial strains, the project will directly support the development of methane mitigation technologies, including vaccines and microbial-based interventions. It will also build research capacity across regions, ensuring broader participation and impact.  

Overall, the project provides the scientific foundation and infrastructure needed to advance sustainable, low-emission livestock systems worldwide.
